The Best Coffee Tables in Phnom Penh
Cheap and manufactured, unique river, or startling infinity? Three kinds of coffee table, three very different futures
There are three kinds of coffee table in this city.
The first is the cheap manufactured table you buy from a furniture store, take home the same day, and quietly replace two or three years later.
The second is a unique river table, handcrafted from Cambodian hardwood, with a channel of poured resin running through it that exists nowhere else in the world.
The third is an infinity table — a startling piece of functional art that turns a bottomless tunnel of light into the centre of your living room.
All three sit in front of the same sofa. Only one of them will still matter to you in ten years. This page explains the difference honestly, and helps you decide which one belongs in your home.
Cheap and Manufactured, Unique River, or Startling Infinity?

A coffee table is the most-used piece of furniture most people own. It holds your drinks, your books, your feet after a long day. It is where guests set their glasses down while they tell you something important. It is where children do their homework, where you eat dinner in front of a film, where the room organises itself around.
It is also the piece of furniture guests actually touch. They do not lean on your wardrobe. They do not run their fingers along your dining table while they talk. But they sit close to your coffee table, put their glass on it, look down at it while listening. It is the piece that gets noticed, whether you designed it to be noticed or not.
That is why the choice of coffee table matters more than most people realise when they are standing in a furniture store.
Why the Coffee Table Matters More Than You Think

Let us describe it fairly. A manufactured coffee table from a local furniture store is affordable, available immediately, and looks perfectly acceptable on the day you buy it. There is no shame in owning one, and if you are furnishing a rental or a room you do not intend to keep, it is the sensible choice.
Here is what happens to it. Within a year the veneer begins to lift at one corner. The finish dulls where hands and glasses rest most often. A leg loosens, because the joint was stapled rather than mortised. Within three years, the piece has become something you are planning to replace rather than something you are proud to own. The timber is usually particleboard with a thin decorative layer, which means it cannot be sanded, repaired, or refinished. When it fails, it fails completely.
And there is a second cost that most buyers do not consider. A manufactured table only works in the room it was bought for. Its colour, its finish and its proportions are fixed. If you redecorate — new sofa, new rug, new wall colour, new lighting — the table no longer fits. So you go back to the furniture store and buy another one. And then another. Over fifteen years, the money adds up to more than a single well-made piece would have cost, and at the end of it you own nothing.

The Cheap Manufactured Option, Honestly
A river table is what happens when Cambodian hardwood and poured resin are combined into something neither material could be alone. Two slabs of timber, hand-selected for grain and figure, with a channel of epoxy running between them — deep blue, emerald, black, or clear.
Every river table is genuinely unique. The resin never behaves the same way twice. The grain is never repeated. The colour of the timber varies from tree to tree. Two tables made side by side in the same workshop on the same day will be different pieces, and that is the point.
We build river coffee tables from USD 950, in sizes from compact 50cm pieces for apartments up to 180cm statement tables for larger living rooms. Round, oval and rectangular. Legs in steel, timber, or a combination. And a choice of timbers including teak, acacia, mango wood, and reclaimed Cambodian hardwood.
The Unique Coffee River Table

Then there is the piece that makes people stop mid-sentence. An infinity coffee table hides an architecture of mirror and light beneath its surface. When the LEDs are lit, the table appears to fall away — a bottomless tunnel of reflection, endlessly repeating, with no visible end. Guests lean in. They reach out to touch it. They ask how it is done.
The effect is startling, and it is also surprisingly restful. At low brightness it is a warm amber glow that softens a room in the evening. Turned up, it is a genuine centrepiece that changes the character of the space entirely.
Infinity tables are made by Nemora, our specialist collection. They begin at USD 990 for a side table and USD 1,500 for a coffee table, with bespoke commissions for larger pieces and commercial installations. Every one is numbered, certified, and recorded in our permanent register, with an NFC Digital Product Passport embedded in the piece.
You can explore the full collection on our infinity tables page.
The Startling Infinity Table

Here is something worth saying plainly, and it applies to both our river tables and our infinity tables.
They blend with any surrounding. This is not a marketing claim — it is a consequence of how they are designed. A river table in deep teak and evocative coloured resin sits comfortably in a traditional wooden interior, a modern minimalist apartment, a colonial shophouse, a hotel suite, or an industrial loft. An infinity table with warm white lighting does the same. The materials are natural, the palette is restrained, and the focal point — the river, the light — works against almost any background.
A manufactured coffee table does not have that quality. It is designed for a specific look and a specific moment. When the look changes, the table dates. If you change your decoration, you have to buy a new one from the furniture store. With a KWD or Nemora piece, you change the cushions, the rug, the art — and the table still belongs.
That is the difference between furniture that follows trends and furniture that outlasts them.
A Table That Works in Any Room, in Any Decade
Ask yourself this. When was the last time you walked into someone's home and commented on their coffee table?
Now think about the reverse. When was the last time a guest walked into your home and said where did you get this? — and meant it?
People do not remember being served coffee on a particleboard table. They remember being served on something remarkable. They remember the resin river catching the light, or the depth of the infinity effect as they set their glass down. They mention it the next day to someone else. And they connect that memory to you — your taste, your home, your hospitality.
That is not a small thing. It is, in the end, the whole point of buying something beautiful.
The Thing Your Guests Remember About Your Coffee Table
Because a coffee table is low and close to the eye, the timber grain is far more visible than it is on a dining table. The choice matters. And the choice is yours
Teak is warm, dense, and naturally oily — beautiful with any resin colour and extremely durable.
Acacia is harder and darker, with strong grain contrast that makes a river table read as a statement piece.
Mango wood is warmer and lighter, with irregular grain and occasional figure. Excellent for a softer, more characterful look.
Rubberwood is plantation-grown, stable and beautifully workable, and it takes a finish well — a good choice for a lighter-toned piece.
Reclaimed Cambodian hardwood brings history with it, and often denser grain and richer colour than new stock.
If you have seen a timber you love, tell us. We will tell you honestly whether it suits a coffee table.
Timbers We Recommend for Coffee Tables
Sizes, Shapes and How to Choose
For a compact living room or apartment: 90cm to 110cm. Round or oval shapes take up less visual space than rectangles and are easier to move around.
For a standard living room: 120cm to 140cm. Rectangular is the most practical, with space for books, trays and drinks.
For a large living room or open-plan space: 150cm to 180cm. This is where a river or infinity table becomes the anchor of the room rather than just a piece of furniture.
For commercial spaces — hotel lounges, bars, showrooms: 180cm and above, or multiple matched pieces. We build these to order with commercial-grade substrates and bases.
Height: Coffee tables sit between 40cm and 45cm for most sofas. If your sofa is unusually low or high, tell us and we will match the piece to it.
Shape and material: Both river and infinity tables work in any shape. If you are unsure, send us a photograph of the room and we will advise honestly on what will suit the space.
Yes, a handcrafted coffee table costs more than one from a furniture store. We are not going to pretend otherwise.
But the comparison is not between two tables at two prices. It is between two different objects. One is designed to be replaced, and will need replacing every time you redecorate or the finish fails. The other is designed to be kept — repaired, refinished, resold, and passed on. One loses value from the day it arrives. The other holds value, and can be verified by a stranger with a phone years from now.
You buy once. Then you stop buying.
If you are furnishing a rental, buy manufactured. If you are furnishing a home you intend to be proud of — a room where you will host friends, celebrate, and spend the better part of your evenings — the arithmetic points the other way
The Investment Is Worth It
Guarantee, Certificate and Passport
Every coffee table we make — river or infinity — is covered by the Khmer Wood Design Guarantee, which includes structural, finish, and electrical coverage where lighting is involved. If something fails, we come to you rather than asking you to return the piece.
Each table carries a numbered certificate of authenticity, a permanent entry in our public register, and a private Digital Product Passport — a dedicated web page describing your specific piece. Tap your phone against the NFC tag embedded in the table and the passport opens. It shows who made it, when, from what materials, and who has owned it since. Only you and those you choose to share it with can view it.
If you ever sell, gift or bequeath your table, we record the ownership transfer free of charge. The next owner inherits the full history. That is what makes a KWD or Nemora piece hold its value in a way that a manufactured table never will.uit the space.
We are not a typical furniture store. We do not have a showroom floor stacked with finished pieces, and nothing is sold from stock. Every table is commissioned by one client, for one room, and built to fit that space.
That means it takes longer than picking something up the same day. It also means you are not settling for something that almost fits, in a finish that is almost right.
To begin, contact us with the size you have in mind, a photograph of the room, and any reference images that inspire you. We will discuss timber options, resin colours or lighting, and base design, then prepare a written quotation. A 50% deposit confirms the order and starts production. Lead time is typically six to twelve weeks.
